Moomey & Faulkner Win Sterling Cut Glass Team Championship

The Club at Old Hawthorne

Monday morning, Brett Moomey's wife Lori posted on Facebook that "I feel good about this one", refering to Brett and his partner Mark Faulkner's chances at the 2011 Sterling Cut Glass Team Championship at The Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, MO.  Will Lori's premonition was spot on as Moomey & Faulkner smoked the field in the annual 36 hole Championship.  Making 18 pars and 18 birdies, the pair poured it on in the afternoon heat with a closing round of 10-under par 62 to take a 2 stroke victory.  After making 8 birdies in the morning round, the team found themselves a single shot back of the Tower Tee team of Steve Lotz and Bob Gaus.  Ten birdies later, Moomey & Faulkner had their first win of 2011.  It looked like a playoff was in the making as the teams of Lotz & Gaus and JC Anderson & Ty Zimmerman both came in early with 16-under par rounds of 128.  That ended when Moomey & Faulkner came in at 18-under par 126.  Finishing tied for 4th place were defending champs Jeff Escott & Gideon Smith (129) and the Norwood Hills team of Ryan Roy & Bobby Pavelonis (129).

Anderson Takes 2nd Major of 2011 at Callaway Section Championship

Old Hickory GC

JC Anderson, Teaching Pro at The Missouri Bluffs GC, started the day two strokes back for the final round at the Callaway Golf Gateway PGA Section Championship at Old Hickory GC.  After 18 holes in extreme heat, Anderson made 8 birdies and set the competitive course record with a round of 66.  The fantastic round put him at 7-under par and was just enough to edge Mark Faulkner by a single shot.  After making bogeys on the 2nd and 3rd holes, Anderson found himself 6 strokes behind Faulkner.  "It just seemed to take the pressure off"  Anderson replied when speaking about the bogeys and then he proceeded to birdie 8 of his last 15 holes in the Championship.  Faulkner's solid play continued as he entered the final round with a 3 shot lead and finished the event with a 2-under par 70.  Faulkner was the only player in the field to post all 3 rounds under par on the tough P. B. Dye layout.  The victory for Anderson was his second major win in the 2011 Gateway PGA season as he captured the Match Play Championship at Annbriar GC in May.  JC hopes to take the Triple Crown of Majors and just needs to take the Gateway Professionals Championship at Lake Forest GC in August to accomplish the feat.  This championship also earns Anderson a spot in the 2012 PGA Professional National Championship where he could evently earn a spot in the 2012 PGA Championship.  Shane Blankenship of Franklin County CC finish 3rd at even par 216. Jason Woods of Birdies & Tees in Osage Beach, MO, playing in his first Gateway PGA Section Champioship, and Mike Suhre of OakBrook GC tied for 4th in the 54-hole event.

Gaus Takes Sr. Match Play Championship

Sunset Hills CC

The Senior Division of the Gateway PGA knew they would have their hands full in 2011 when Bob Gaus of Tower Tee GC turned 50 late last year.  Gaus wasted little time in capturing his first Senior Title by winning the 2011 Sr. Match Play Championship at Sunset Hills CC in Edwardsville, IL.  Gaus, runner-up in the Regular Match Play Championship at Annbriar last month, breezed through his first two matches over Mike Brengard & 2010 Sr. Player of the Year Mark Faulkner playing nearly flawless golf.  In the Championship Match, he faced Bellerive CC Teaching Pro Brian Fogt for the title.  Fogt started quickly with birdies on #1, #3, and #4, and had a 2-up lead on Gaus after 6 holes, but Gaus birdied #7 and saved par on #9 to even the match at the turn.  Gaus then rallied with birdies on #11 & #13 to go to up.  Fogt wasn't about to go away without a fight though as he won #14 and birdied #15 to get the match back to all square.  Both players halved #16 & #17 with pars and the match came down to the final hole, a challenging 408 yard par-4 into the wind.  Fogt missed the fairway to the right while Gaus drove his tee shot down the center of the fairway.  When both players missed the green with their approach shots, Gaus managed to get his up and down to secure the title.  Fogt reached the final by defeating Jeff Whitfield of Columbia, MO, in 22 holes, in his semi-final match.

Smith & Heckel Win Southern IL Open Titles

Crab Orchard GC

Gideon Smith, Head PGA Professional at Quincy CC, made the long trip down from Quincy worth every mile as he captured the 2011 Southern Illinois Open Championship at Crab Orchard GC.  It took some extra effort on Smith's part as he was tied for the lead at 3-under par 137 at the end of the 36 hole mark with JC Anderson of The Missouri Bluffs GC.  On the second playoff hole, both players missed the green with their approach shots, but Smith was able to get it up and down to save par and win the event.  Rounding out the top 5 were Oakbrook GC's Mike Suhre (138), Mark Faulkner of Lake of Egypt CC (139), and Brian Fogt of Bellerive CC (139).

In the Senior Division, Host Professional and Gateway PGA Hall of Fame Member Steve Heckel, cruised to a 2 stroke victory finished at 3-under par 67 in the 18 hole Event for players over the age of 50.  Steve Lotz of Tower Tee GC and Scott Bess of Columbia, MO, finished at 1-under par 69 to tie for the runner-up spot.  Mark Faulkner and Brian Fogt tied for fourth place with even par 70's.

Anderson Claims Tower Tee Invitational

Tower Tee GC

JC Anderson, PGA Teaching Professional at The Missouri Bluffs GC, shot a 5-under par round of 49, on his way to his second consecutive Gateway PGA victory of 2011.  Fresh off his victory in the Match Play Championship at Annbriar GC, Anderson continued his solid play on his way to the $2000 payday.  Bob Gaus of Tower Tee and Scott Bess of Columbia, MO, finished tied in the runner-up spot, 3 shots behind Anderson, with 2-under par 52's.  A nice turnout of 46 Pros and 12 Amateurs tried out their skills on the St. Louis landmark known as Tower Tee.  Steve Lotz, Host PGA Professional, had the course in perfect condition, challenging the field as the winds were gusting around all day.  Brett Fleming bested the Amateur Division with a 1-under par 53, edging Gene Keiter, the Gateway PGA Scoreboard Guru, by a stroke at even par 54.

Anderson Takes First Major of 2011

Match Play Championship at Annbriar GC

JC Anderson, Teaching Professional at The Missouri Bluffs GC, captured the first Major of the 2011 season in the Match Play Championship at Annbriar GC.  Anderson played a nearly flawless round in his final match to win the title with a 4 & 3 win over Bob Gaus of Tower Tee GC.  Anderson made 6 birdies in 15 holes, while Gaus made 4 birdies of his own, in the classic final.  Anderson banked $1500 for the Championship.  In semi-final action, both matches went to overtime as Anderson defeated Franklin County's Shane Blankenship in 20 holes, while Gaus edged Bellerive CC's Mike Tucker in 19 holes.  The next major on the 2011 Gateway PGA schedule is the Section Championship at Old Hickory CC on July 18th and 19th.
